After three years of investigation, South Africa President Jacob Zuma read the findings of the Marikana Report on an evening broadcast on 25 June 2015. The hill of the Marikana Massacre, where 34 miners were killed during the wildcat strike on August 16, 2012 was quiet. The image was taken minutes after President Zuma finished the report on television at the Lonmin Marikana mine on Rustenburgs Platinum belt. From the moment I heard the announcement that Zuma was due to read the findings on television, I knew where I wanted to be. The only problem was there was little time to get there. It meant driving through the night to arrive at the quiet hill moments after he had finished. I recall struggling to hear the crackling radio waves over the sound of the highway as I hurtled through the dark. It was a drive I knew very well, having done so many times before and having covered the Marikana Commission. When I got to the hill, I was expecting someone to have sent a final farewell to those who lost their lives. All that was there was silence.
